Request a Grant Writer

Grants to Virginia nonprofit organizations serving eligible locations for initiatives to improve the quality of life for local residents. Funding is intended to support projects in a range of focus areas, including culture, health and wellness, economic stability, education, and the environment. Eligible organizations serve the residents of South Hampton Roads, including those in Chesapeake, Eastern Shore of Virginia (Accomack and Northampton counties), Franklin, Isle of Wight County, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach.

The Foundation channels funding through competitive Community Grants for:
  • Seed and program funding: to begin a promising new program or service or expand an existing one - available in the areas of Cultural Vitality, Economic Stability, Educational Success, Environmental Stewardship, and Health and Wellness.
  • Vibrant places funding: to build or improve area nonprofit facilities through major capital projects and capital campaigns.

Focus Areas:

  • Community Grants for Cultural Vitality support programs offering hands-on arts and cultural experiences for area children. The goal is to help the educational, social or emotional well-being of youth through arts and culture.
  • Community Grants for Economic Stability focus on providing opportunities for people with barriers to success to become stable, self-sufficient, and prosperous.
  • Community Grants for Educational Success strive to improve educational achievement of under-performing children and youth from the region. They encourage growth through opportunities for all students to excel in their educational pursuits and meet the region's current and future workforce demands.
  • Community Grants for the Environmental Stewardship focus on programs that educate youth in grades 3 through 12 about Hampton Roads waterways' health and the impact of sea level rise on the region.
  • Community Grants for Health and Wellness focus on improving the health of the region's citizens.
  • Vibrant Places Grants support major capital projects and campaigns that are transformative for the organization and the communities it serves. Organizations requesting Vibrant Places facilities grants should support one of the above focus areas.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Hampton Roads Community Foundation welcomes grant applications from 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving residents of South Hampton Roads, including those in Chesapeake, Eastern Shore of Virginia (Accomack and Northampton counties), Franklin, Isle of Wight County, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach.

The community foundation will consider awarding grants to specific municipal entities or component units of government for projects generally provided by nonprofit agencies in other communities. This policy does not prohibit public and private colleges and universities from applying for funding.

If your organization has received a Hampton Roads Community Foundation grant in the past three years, the Foundation asks that you not apply for funding for the same type of grant. However, if you received a Community Grant for seed and program projects, you can apply for a Community Grant for Vibrant Places (nonprofit facilities improvement). Similarly, if you received a Vibrant Places grant, you can apply for seed and program support. You can apply annually for a Special Interest Grant, which will not affect your eligibility for a Community Grant.

For grants that are generally not funded, see https://hamptonroadscf.org/Nonprofits/Apply-for-a-Grant/Eligibility-Requirements.
