Grants to Virginia nonprofit organizations for programming, seed funding, and capital support in eligible regions. Focus areas include culture, health and wellness, economic stability, education, and environment. Funding is intended to support organizations that serve residents of South Hampton Roads in Southern Virginia.

Focus Areas:
  • Community Grants for Cultural Vitality support programs offering hands-on arts and cultural experiences for area children. The goal is to help the educational, social or emotional well-being of youth through arts and culture.
  • Community Grants for Economic Stability focus on providing opportunities for people with barriers to success to become stable, self-sufficient, and prosperous.
  • Community Grants for Educational Success strive to improve educational achievement of under-performing children and youth from the region. They encourage growth through opportunities for all students to excel in their educational pursuits and meet the region's current and future workforce demands.
  • Community Grants for the Environmental Stewardship focus on programs that educate youth in grades 3 through 12 about Hampton Roads waterways' health and the impact of sea level rise on the region. 
  • Community Grants for Health & Wellness focus on improving the health of the region's citizens.
  • Vibrant Places Grants -  support major capital projects and campaigns that are transformative for the organization and the communities it serves. Organizations requesting Vibrant Places facilities grants should support one of the above focus areas.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Hampton Roads Community Foundation welcomes grant applications from 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving residents of southeastern Virginia, primarily in the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach as well as Franklin, Isle of Wight County and Accomack and Northampton counties on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Eligibility Service Area and Requirements (full details):

If the applying organization is awarded a Vibrant Places facilities grant, it may not reapply for another facilities grant for at least three years from the date of the award. However, the organization may apply for seed or program funding during this period.

Grants are generally NOT available for:
- Organizations without tax-exemption under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code
- Individuals
- Fundraising events (such as tickets, raffles, auctions or tournaments), annual fundraising appeals,or agency celebrations
- Ongoing operating support
- Capital projects and facilities and equipment upgrades that can be considered routine maintenance or replacements
- Religious activities (organizations and activities that require religious participation by those receiving services)
- Political or fraternal organizations
- Endowment building
- Existing obligations, debts or liabilities, or costs that an agency has already incurred
- Scholarly research
- Scholarships, camper fees, fellowships, or travel
- Passenger vans for transporting youth
- National or international organizations or purposes
- Hospitals and similar health-care facilities, unless applying for a Special Interest Grant
- Private primary or secondary schools, daycare facilities or academies other than those whose primary purpose is for students with special needs
- Capital campaign requests exceeding 5% of a campaign valued at $1 million or more
- Houses of worship
- Projects or services normally considered the responsibility of government*
- Private primary or secondary schools, daycare facilities or academies other than those whose primary purpose is for students with special needs**
- Capital campaign requests exceeding 5% of a campaign valued at $1 million or more

*The Foundation will consider awarding grants to specific municipal entities or component units of government for projects generally provided by nonprofit agencies in other communities. This policy does not prohibit public and private colleges and universities from applying for funding.

Additionally, Nonprofit Training Sessions will be held throughout the year to assist in the application process.
